Day 15 Saturday 4th October

Today it's the day for Georgia's holy of holies, where it all started and now goes on stronger than ever.

But first things first, having looked up the Georgian rugby union shop online, we head out in search of souvenirs. We got the street Okay but the metro station was, we discovered, the wrong end for the shop. A long walk ensued and the shop was a bit of a disappointment. Stock and sizes were very limited. The best thing about it was the two 14 year old lads who were rugby mad. They were also very helpful, getting us aboard a marshrutky that went to the chaotic marshrutky station from whence we could proceed to Mtskheta, our eventual destination.

Every decent Cathedral needs it's bit of magic. The aim is to get the punters in and thereby keep the coffers full. The Svetitshoveli Cathedral at Mtskheta goes for the big one.
CHRIST'S ROBE no less (come to think about it Jerusalem isn't too far to the west.....) if the tale was an opera plot, you wouldn't believe it. Plenty of people do however.

Saturday is wedding day, with a vengeance!

The priest is either on the hot line to the Big One, or summoning another two dozen priests to cope with the rush.

Twenty four weddings and,

and a baptism. Where's the funeral I hear you ask.

Not here!

The church up the hill in the background is Jvari. This is where King Mirian erected a cross soon after his conversion by St Nino in 4th century thereby founding the church in his Kingdom.

This is the other church in Mtskheta called Samtavro. It is now part of a nunnery and the good King Mirian and his missus Queen Nana are buried here and you can see below some very early detail from the 4th (??) Century. We took the marshrutky back. 28 people on a 16 seater bus. Off to Armenia tomorrow. Hope there's more room on that bus.
